Born in London, Leighton was supported in her artistic pursuits, learning her craft in three different schools. Leighton moved to the United States prior to World War II, where she continued her career as an artist and as a teacher until the 1980s. In addition to over 900 woodblock prints, she also was an accomplished author and illustrator. She was the first woman to produce a book on wood-engraving (Wood-Engraving and Woodcuts, 1932).
